Can you teach me to sew/hem/make alterations?

I had to alter some oversized volunteer shirts recently and ended up using scotch tape to hem the sleeves, it ended up being quite scratchy!  Luckily the shirts were only needed temporarily, but I also need to make minor alterations to a dress - it would great to learn how to use a sewing machine, and how to properly alter, repurpose and sew different types of fabric.  If you enjoy sewing and would enjoy sharing your skill, please let me know :)
