Many American States have an "Unclaimed Property Website" that reunites owners with their lost or misplaced property, such as old bank accounts, refunds that have gone astray, perhaps a credit you had with a merchant 10 years ago. Especially in our mobile society, in which we may change addresses often, creditors give up trying to locate you and send the money to the State to hold for a few years before it may "escheat" to the Treasury.
It is easy to check the Unclaimed Property website to see if you have money coming, but the first time you do this, it might help to have a guide. I'll be happy to do this, either in person or via Zoom.
There is no guarantee you have anything out there - but you might!
(NOTE: There *are* comercial services that will do this for you for a fee, but it's so easy, let me walk you through it the 1st time!)
UPDATE: WOW! I just cashed a check from the State of Pennsylvania because --- years ago --- when I paid off my graduate school loan, there was a little bit of money left over (due to interest accruing daily and my check arriving before the deadline). Of course the student loan lender didn't send me the overage; they sat on it for years before turning it over to the state THEY were in (Pennsylvania - surely a nice state but not one I have EVER lived in!)
BUT - I was exploring a new website that aggregated results from all 50 states and saw this account. Reclaiming my money took about 5 minutes and cost me nothing.
Did you have a student loan that you paid off? We can see if you have a little bit of daily interest sitting somewhere for you!
