Free! Bring small household items and textiles, and our experienced volunteer fixers will try to repair and mend them.
Join us for this fun waste reduction event, at the historic fieldhouse in Steve Cox Memorial Park, just east of McLendon's Hardware.
Sign-ups are informal and not required, but if you can, contact event coordinator Tom Watson by e-mail or at 206-477-4481. You could also post questions and RSVP on the Facebook event page external link .
Once again we will have:
- Free community clothing swap. Bring and take any clothes you like! Clothes should be washed and in wearable condition. Hosted by the King County Parks White Center Teen Program.
- Donations for WestSide Baby. For a list of most-needed new/used children's items and acceptable donations for this White Center-based non-profit, see WestSideBaby.org external link .
- Kids' activities. Coloring and games for young children, while their parents are having their items repaired and mended.
More details on the repair event itself:
- It's "first-come, first-served" (matching the items with the fixers with the appropriate skills) and we try, if possible, to work on at least one item from each person who comes. If you bring more than one item, we will may work on additional items if time allows. Arrive as early as you can.
- You must be present during the repair or mending. There is no assurance an item can be fixed, or that attempting to fix it won't break it even more. Fixers & menders can decline to work on a job, for any reason.
- Because this event wraps up by 12:30 pm, we will probably not start new jobs after 12:00 noon.
- For specialized repairs, fixers may not need you to bring the specific parts or materials to fit your item.
- Please only bring items easily carried by one person. Do not bring anything dirty (including on the inside), leaking, dangerous, containing gasoline, or with a strong odor. Clothing and other textiles should be washed first.
- Walk-ins are fine, but please check in advance if possible, to confirm that it's an appropriate item, and so we can let you know what else you should bring with the item (parts, cords, attachments, etc.), for to increase the likelihood fixers can mend or repair.
This event to reducing waste and build community is brought to you by King County Solid Waste Division and King County Parks Division. Thank you to their devoted mending and fixing volunteers! See schedule of King County-sponsored repair events (and other King County repair events, as we hear about them).
This is the last event of our season. Fix-it events will resume March 2020. Locations are throughout King County besides Seattle.
Thanks - see you there!
